Rock Balancing, flamenco guitar, wheel throwing, bluegrass and painters, all that and more will stimulate your senses at the new Artistic Expressions venue during Westerner Days Fair & Exposition.
In an evolution that started last year, Westerner Days Fair & Exposition brings a whole new focus to the many ways that artists and artisans celebrate our world.
Nationally acclaimed artists including the Western Lights Art Group, Clarence Kapay, Val Moker, and more will be exhibiting their work. Shop the gallery or the exhibits and pick up an original print or sculpture for your collection!
Enjoy live art demonstrations as diverse as a human statue, wheel throwing, rock balancing and glass blowing.
Rock Balancing by Team Sandtastic
Come and see artists from Team Sandtastic defy gravity and balance rocks in formations that will leave you mesmerized. No... there are no wires in there holding them up... no glue... no tricks... nothing but the patience and steady hands of the Professional Rock Stacker.
Glass Blowing by Leah Duperreault
Leah started working with glass in 2002 and runs a small company called Glass Duck where she blows and casts glass.
Or take in the Artistic Expressions Stage where performance artists will dazzle you with bluegrass, country-folk, live theatre, flamenco guitar and square dancing. Performers on the Artistic Expressions stages include:
Blue Grass Orphans
The Blue Grass Orphans plays and sings Blue Grass music much like the original Blue Grass groups from the 1930’s to 1950’s. Their inspiration comes from such legends as Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys, and the Stanley Brothers. The Blue Grass Orphans look forward to playing for you, entertaining you, and passing on their passion and love for Roots Blue Grass Music!
Central Alberta Theatre Melodrama– ‘The Drunkard…or…the Fallen Saved”
This year’s melodrama is entitled “The Drunkard… or… The Fallen Saved” and revolves around a villain (the Lawyer Cribbs) with the assistance of his sidekick (Stickler) who attempts to steal all the wealth, property and girlfriend (our heroine, supported by her widowed mother), of our hero by turning him into a drunkard. As in most melodramas, the plot unfolds with the usual collection of twists, turns, and cliff hangers and might even conclude with a happy ending. Lots of “Gay Nineties” (that’s the 1890’s) music will be integrated into the performance. Each evening at 5:30 pm, an excerpt from the play will be performed on the entertainment stage in Artistic Expressions.
Cort Delano
Cort’s the real thing, an original. He performs roots songs in a roots style without anything to hide behind or lean on and he’s picking up where the revival left off. His engaging presence and ease on stage comes across natural, refreshing and like a summer breeze and the audience can just sink into his lively story telling performances. Catch him on the Artistic Expressions Stage.
Dani-Lynn Trentham
When you first hear this pretty little Canadian, you can’t imagine she’s just 15 years old. She’s got a big voice for such a small, petite frame, and the talent to make it as one of Country/Pop’s biggest stars. Growing up in Olds, Alberta, Dani-Lynn has always had a love for singing and performing.
With her positive attitude and passion for her music, the sky’s the limit for Dani-Lynn!
Donna Durand
At the core of Donna's performance is a tone that resonates a raw and vulnerable emotion and genuine passion for stories told through song. Donna approaches the song writing process from the idea to playing out with a sense of wonder, and collaboration. These songs come from a way of life - a prairie perspective. ‘The Road Back’ is Donna's first CD and by no means the last as the songs just keep a comin’. See Donna on the Artistic Expressions Stage.
Randi Boulton
Randi Boulton is a Canadian singer/songwriter born and raised around the Alberta prairies. Other than piano lessons when she was young, and some vocal and guitar playing, Randi is self taught in her craft. She wants to feel her music, and wants that feeling to resonate with her audience. Her extensive performing and recording background proves that she indeed strikes a chord with many fans. Her influences include Canadian music greats Jann Arden and Sarah McLauglin.
She is currently recording an album with Jann Arden's producer in Calgary and Randi’s goal is to continue to push her boundaries as a musician and share her talent with the rest of Canada.
Micah Turchet
Micah's first taste of flamenco occurred when he was five years old. At a Paco Pena/Inti Illiamani concert in Calgary, he jumped out of his seat and exclaimed; "Now this is what I call music!" Six years later another flamenco maestro would fuel Micah's interest. In 2006, Juan Martin gave a concert in the town of Sundre, Alberta. Micah talked with Juan after the concert, and was advised to pursue learning flamenco with the help of DVDs and books as teaching aids. In the ensuing four years, Micah followed Juan's advice, and set himself to the task of learning to play solo flamenco guitar.
Micah won second place at Westerner Park’s Northern Star Talent Search competition, and has qualified to compete at Capital Ex in Edmonton this summer. In addition to performing on the Artistic Expressions Stage, Micah will also be participating in the Calgary Stampede Talent Search and perform on the Family Stage at the Big Valley Jamboree in August.
Ross Stafford
Ross is a singer/songwriter that was born and raised in Red Deer. He is a self-taught guitar player since age 17 and wrote his first song at 20. Most of the folk/roots style music he writes pertains to real-life experiences involving family and friends. The reaction of people during odd or difficult situations is of particular interest and he likes to leave the listener with the hope that a rainbow appears after every storm.
The Doll Sisters
When you hear The Doll Sisters, you'll recognize them. They put their own style into anything they play. The girls, (Jenna, 18 & Shelby, 16) would definitely describe themselves as roots musicians, and love the fact that being roots musicians affords them the opportunity to cover all of the genres that they love so well. Bluegrass, Celtic, Folk, Appalachian, Cowboy & East Coast Canadian, to name a few. Whether they're playing carefully chosen covers, or their own originals, you will find that their music maintains the traditional integrity that is so important, but between the arrangements and the lyrics, their songs are unmistakeably thought provoking and unique.
The Amber Williams Band
Amber Williams is a 27 year old farm girl from the Chedderville Community near Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. From a young age music has always been a big part of her life and has spent the last 3 years singing and performing with her band. With a high energy show, Amber’s passion for music shines through and is sure to please any age group and keeps your toes tapping and the dance floor full.
